Jeannie and the Bears
I call this story Jeannie and the Bears, because Jeannie was a client of mine who lived in a community in New Jersey, which has Bears; a rural community. And, they’re not the most fierce, they’re not the Grizzlies, but they’re black bears. They’re wild animals and they’re fairly big. Everybody knows how to handle black bears in the sense that they know just what to do if they see one, they’re not afraid of them. Jeannie grew up; her children lived there for 18 years. Her children have no fear of bears.
Jeannie was terrified of bears and it was one of the main reasons she came to me for counseling. And, she had a long driveway, from her house (it was very rural) to the road where her post office box was. She could not walk on that driveway for fear of meeting a bear. It just was too frightening to her. Everybody else could do it on their driveways, but not her. So, she had to get another car every day and go down to get her mail, rather than walk.

We tried a number of things and we did EFT, and she was getting little better, but not fast enough. We weren’t getting as much from the general statements, “I choose to feel calm and confident when I’m walking,” and so forth.
So, I asked her (we were on a cell phone), “Jeannie, tell me. Do you know anybody in your community who is just so perfect in the way they handle bears, or the idea of meeting a bear, that you would love to be like that person?” And, she didn’t hesitate a second. She thought of a resource person.
She said, “Of course, I know I’d like to be like my friend Mary.”
She said, “Mary is unbelievable.” She has a driveway longer than me, She down it every day. She’s seen a bear once or twice on the mountain, and looking at her, and she handled just right. She stops and does all the recommended things.
She said, “Mary has no problem at all. She just doesn’t. She’s just as cool as a cucumber. I’d love to be like Mary.”
So, I said, “Alright.” We made the statement, Even though I’m terrified of meeting a bear on my driveway; I choose to be just like Mary.”
Well, the minute she began tapping in that statement, she was going around but different parts of the tapping sequence, tapping on a spot.
“I choose to be just like Mary.”
She meant she wanted to be like Mary in that one trait; her ability to handle bears. And, she tapped that in and we saw a dramatic change. She was able to begin to walk down the driveway. She was talking to me. She felt calm.
When she called me (the) next week, she said, “I can’t believe it. I have walk down my driveway every single day. Only once did I really get a little bit of anxiety. And then I tapped and said, ‘I choose to be like Mary, I choose to be like Mary, and it went right away.”
She said she’d been driving along the road and she saw a bear standing by the edge of the road on its hind legs looking at her. And, she said, “You know, it was really interesting to see that bear and I didn’t feel frightened.”
So, this permanently took away Jeannie’s fear of the bear, because she borrowed that resource from her friend, Mary.

How to Borrow Power Resources to Change Your life
One of the most striking traits of human beings is their capacity to adopt new behaviors and attitudes through imitating others – whether they are copying from their own species or another. A powerful “imitating” ability is born into all of us. It is the basis of all our culture and has made possible what we call civilization. You can use EFT to switch what you thought were unalterable characteristics of yours, to exactly those you desire to have, by using this ability in a new way. (Get 25% off the Audio & eBook Combo!)
