Shed the Burden of Continual Worry

Why Does Worrying Seem Necessary?

Worrying tends to put us in a state of prediction-making that provides us with a sense of control. We speculate possible detrimental scenarios and want to be braced for them.

Certainly, knowing what’s going to happen might bring a sense of safety, even if the scenarios were to be terrible. Of course, this then can spiral into more worry about how to deal with any other related scenarios we might imagine.

Understandably, being out of control and not knowing feels very vulnerable at times. It’s human to be concerned when we feel out of control. This is especially true when unexpected situations arise that may pose physical or emotional threats to ourselves and those we care about.

Commonly, humans attempt to predict the future, which can bring a sense of control of the uncontrollable. When we engage in that thinking, we become our own prophet that may come to believe the most dreaded outcomes are actually going to happen.

Why Is It So Hard to Stop Worrying?

According research, excessive worrying indicates that, over time, a person may believe their excessive worrying contributed to deterring negative consequences in the past. Therefore, this may reinforce and maintain worrying behavior.

While it gets in our way, we may be afraid NOT to worry. We think something is going to happen if we don’t worry and it will be worse.

During unexpected situations, like those we’ve not experienced before, fear, anger, and other emotions can jump into action. If left unbridled, they can swell into full-fledged anxiety.

On the other hand, familiar situations are easier to adjust to and contend with. This is because our brain processes provide us resources on how to move ahead through the situation.
