How to Do EFT Part 2: Beyond the Basics

footprints on a beautiful beach, beyond the basics of EFTUncovering Hidden Aspects

If you went through the exercises in the Step-by-Step Guide to doing EFT and encountered blocks to lowering your Intensity Rating for your particular problem, there may be hidden Aspects to the issue that need to surface.

Knowing about Aspects in EFT can make the method more valuable for you, and you can do more with it when you become aware of them.

You can think of Aspects as pieces of a puzzle. Every piece makes up the full picture of a  troubling issue.

Here are some examples of locating hidden Aspects of a problem and using the Tapping Method to clear them.

The Single Aspect

Sometimes, there is only one Aspect to a problem. For example, some years ago, a woman who attended an EFT conference that I was speaking at volunteered to do a tapping session with me. She was doubtful that the tapping would help her problem.

Her problem was a distressing fear of elevators, and she had the fear for as long as she could remember. She could not recall any event or incident that that might have been associated with her fear.

After 15 – 20 minutes of tapping with her, she proclaimed that she felt silly, because thinking about riding in an elevator no longer distressed her. She was so confident that she agreed to go out into the conference center hall and test her progress.

She and I, along with the group of attendees, went into the hallway to an elevator. She pushed the elevator button. The elevator arrived and the door opened. As she stepped forward to enter the elevator, I noticed that she was frowning slightly. I asked what her Intensity Rating was, and she replied that it had risen to a three.

I instructed her to stop so we could tap it down. Once her Intensity Rating returned to zero, she pushed the button again to hail an elevator. When the door opened, she calmly stepped inside. I and several other people in the group joined her. She pushed the button for the sixth floor. As we rode in the elevator to the sixth floor, she remained calm and smiled all the way!

By simply tapping on one Aspect, her life-long fear of elevators halted. She never remembered what might have possibly caused her fear, but that didn’t matter, and it didn’t hinder the clearing of her fear.

Multiple Aspects

Many times, there is more than one Aspect to a problem.

Listen to the audio below of Dr. Carrington to learn how one man’s anxious fear of crossing a street involved discovering several hidden Aspects related to his childhood memory of getting struck, and then dragged down the street, by a car.

As you may have realized by now, it is important not to confuse your Intensity Rating for the issue as a whole, with your Intensity Rating for one single Aspect. They’re not the same thing.

If You Have Trouble Reducing Your Intensity Rating

  • Search your memory of the troubling scene for other possible Aspects and tap them down.
  • Retake your Intensity Rating for the ENTIRE issue (it should be down)

The process that you just learned works for most issues. However, there are some issues in life that involve more Aspects, and sometimes there are many Aspects.

For example, in cases of childhood abuse, there can be many different incidents involved and therefore, many different Aspects to unravel and work on.

Similarly, in cases of traumatic War memories that result in PTSD, there may be a series of different memories that need attention.

Another example may be experiences of many illnesses, surgeries, or hospitalizations involving many stressful scenes that would need to be tapped down separately.

If you have a deeper, more serious issue, like any of the examples above that involve multiple traumas, I suggest that you seek professional help in working with it. Fortunately, there are a number of therapists trained in EFT, and they use it along with their traditional methods of therapy.

Such therapists can help you by asking the right questions to pinpoint other Aspects of your issue, while providing support.

How to Apply EFT to Your Everyday Life

There are three ways in which you can use EFT to assist you on a daily basis.

Use EFT for:

  1. Past or ongoing issues
  2. Present Situations
  3. Future Situations (Anticipatory EFT)
Listen to the audio below as Dr. Carrington shares some tips for using EFT in present and future situations.

I want to thank you for your interest in learning EFT and I hope you have a very good and rewarding experience with it.
