How to Relax Introduction

During the mid-80’s, Random House Publishers decided to produce an audio on relaxation as part of a self-improvement audio series they were launching, and they contacted me with their idea.

Skeptical, I told them the truth. I didn’t think anyone would want to buy a relaxation recording anymore because almost all progressive relaxation audios on the market had a serious flaw.

These otherwise useful products taught people how to relax while lying down, often with their eyes closed, in a quiet place. That’s a great thing to do and I highly recommend it, but how many times during your day can you lie down in a quiet place with your eyes closed? It’s good when you are learning to relax – as a first step — but not for every day of relaxation.

What people needed, I told the company, was instruction on how to relax while in full action. People need to learn how to relax first, then learn how to remain fully relaxed while running, swimming, typing on a keyboard, answering the phone, or whatever else they have to do during the day. This would lead to improved performance in whatever activity they were engaged in, and it would certainly make them healthier.

As a result, Random House engaged me to write and narrate an audio that teaches relaxation in action. The project led to a very finished professional production, complete with actors to depict stressful situations.

While we all thought it would be a useful addition to their line of self-improvement audios, we didn’t expect the extent of its great success. Because people really do need to relax during action, my How to Relax in Motion audio became the bestselling audio in the Random House series. When it was distributed to bookstores throughout the world it broke records.

In 1999, Random House sold its distribution division and all publishing rights to the audio were soon after returned to me. It has since been digitized into 2 MP3s.

Here’s a short video clip of the training that includes an initial relaxation session for you to practice. With all best wishes, Pat
