Meditation for High Blood Pressure, Bronchial Asthma, and Tension Headaches

This audio clip is excerpted from Dr. Patricia Carrington’s Learn to Meditate Course

Dr. Herbert Benson, who was a cardiologist at Harvard Medical School, conducted a number of studies using meditation in the reduction of hypertension. He found a consistent reduction in blood pressure in many hypertensive patients, after they learned meditation.

That doesn’t mean that every such patient who learns it will necessarily find their blood pressure normalizing. But, the averages are very impressive, so that meditation seems well worth trying for someone with this problem.
Now, another tension related illness that seems to respond well to meditation is bronchial asthma. Research studies have shown some marked improvement in the condition of asthmatics who regularly meditate.

And, one of the most impressive effects of meditation on a physical condition that I’ve seen is with tension headaches. Not only does it tend to reduce their severity and their frequency, but I’ve often seen it eliminate tension headaches entirely, within a period of weeks after a person learned to meditate.

Meditation is so often effective for this condition, that I now regularly advise a person who’s suffering from tension headaches to learn meditation.
