Meditation for Greater Inner Independence

This audio clip is excerpted from Dr. Patricia Carrington’s Learn to Meditate Course

There’s another advantage, too, that we often get from this quiet time alone with ourselves. We begin to get a new feeling for who we are and what our opinions are, and this affects many things that we do in our everyday life.

Many meditators will find that they’re now able to make decisions much more easily, because they’re recognizing their own feelings and their own opinions more sharply. And, they find that they’re less influenced by others’ opinions.

That doesn’t mean they can’t take advice or criticism. In fact, they may often benefit from it more than they did before, because now they’re not defending themselves against it. It simply means that now they’re not overwhelmed by what people say. Instead, they’re more aware of what they think about themselves, about situations, about life.

The result of this is that the people who meditate regularly often become more self-assertive, in a good way, not in a “proving” way, where they’re over-aggressive, or insistent. But, they simply experience a quiet inner strength. And, because of this, they now have the ability to stand up for their own rights in a very fundamental way.

This increase in inner Independence is probably one of the most important and profound benefits of meditation.
